Help & FAQ
Quick answers to the questions we hear most from businesses considering HoverReel, or just getting started. Can't find what you're looking for? Email support@hoverreel.com — a real person reads every message.
Getting started
HoverReel lets you embed shoppable, call-to-action video on your own website with a single snippet of code — no video hosting, no app to install on your storefront, nothing for your visitors to download. You upload or link a video, tag it to a product or a call-to-action, and drop it into one of eight Player styles (a floating corner player, a scrolling carousel, a full-screen "Stories" experience, and more).
For most merchants, well under 15 minutes for a first, real, working embed. Guided Setup starts by asking where you want video — on one page, on each product's own page, in the corner of every page, or in a Player you already have — and then walks you through only the three or four short steps that takes, choosing the right settings for you. It hands you a real embed code at the end, with where to paste it. You don't have to plan anything out in advance; you can always come back and refine it later.
No. You paste one snippet into an HTML block on your site (most page builders and platforms have one) and everything else — layout, playback, analytics — is handled for you. If your site has a developer or agency, they can add it in a couple of minutes; if not, it's copy-and-paste. See Add HoverReel to your site for step-by-step instructions for Shopify, WordPress, Squarespace and more.
Either works: upload a video file directly (we handle hosting, transcoding, and delivery for you), or paste a link to a video you're already hosting elsewhere. There's nothing extra to set up on your end either way.
Uploads can be up to 10 minutes long and 2GB. For a longer video, like a full sermon or a webinar, paste a link to the video file where it's already hosted; linked videos have no length limit.
Add HoverReel to your site
Every Player gives you a short embed code: copy it from the last step of Guided Setup, or from the Player's Publish tab. Three things to know before you paste it:
- Paste it into a code block, the kind called Custom Liquid, Custom HTML, Code or Embed. Not a video or image block, and don't ask your platform's AI assistant to build a block for it. It needs to go in exactly as-is.
- The Floating Player sits in the corner of the screen, so it doesn't matter where on the page you paste it. Every other Player shows up exactly where you paste it.
- The block will look empty in your site editor. That's normal. Most editors don't run outside code while you're editing. Check your live page in a new tab instead.
On one page, or one product template
A Player pasted on a product template shows the same videos on every product that uses that template. To give each product its own videos, see Show each product its own videos.
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize on your live theme.
- At the top of the editor, open the page dropdown (it usually says "Home page") and pick the page you want. For a product, choose Products and then the template that product uses.
- In the left sidebar, click Add section and choose Custom Liquid. (Or, inside the Product information section, Add block → Custom liquid.)
- Paste your embed code into the Custom Liquid box and click Save. For a Player that shows up in the page, drag the section to where you want it.
On every page (Floating Player)
- Go to Online Store → Themes, click the … button on your live theme and choose Edit code.
- Open
layout/theme.liquid. - Paste your embed code on the line right before
</body>and click Save.
Don't use a Video block, or a block made with Shopify's AI block generator or Sidekick. They build their own block and leave the HoverReel code out, so nothing shows up.
In Settings → Embed protection, add your
store's domain and its .myshopify.com
address.
First, in HoverReel's Settings → Your website, choose BigCommerce. The steps below then match what you see.
1. Bring in your products
On the Products tab, click Import from BigCommerce. The first time, it asks for a read-only API account:
- In your BigCommerce control panel, go to Settings, and under API choose Store-level API accounts. Click Create API account.
- Name it "HoverReel". Set Products and Information & settings to read-only, and leave everything else as None. Click Save.
- BigCommerce shows a BigCommerce API credentials box (and downloads the same details as a file). Copy its API path and Access token into HoverReel.
Then pick products from the list. Each one comes in with its product page, price and photo, ready for Add to Cart.
2. Allow your store's addresses
In Settings → Embed protection, add your
store's domain, and its .mybigcommerce.com address
too.
3. Paste your Player's code into Script Manager
- Copy the code from your Player's Publish tab (or the last step of Guided Setup).
- In BigCommerce, open Storefront → Script Manager and click Create a script.
- Name it "HoverReel". Choose Footer, Storefront pages, Essential, and Script type Script. Paste the code into Script contents and click Save.
A Floating Player then shows on every page. For a Player
that sits in the page (Carousel, Grid and so on), also add
Page Builder's HTML widget where it should
appear and paste the short <div> line from
the Publish tab into it. Script Manager only accepts scripts,
so that line goes in separately.
Sizes and colors: once the code is in Script Manager, shoppers choose a product's size and color right in the video, and the header cart count updates. Use Script Manager, not a page's HTML widget, for the code itself: only Script Manager gives HoverReel what it needs to read your products' options.
First, in HoverReel's Settings → Your website, choose WooCommerce.
1. Bring in your products
On the Products tab, click Import from WooCommerce and enter your store's web address. That's all - no plugin, key or login. Then pick products from the list; each one comes in with its product page, price and photo, ready for Add to Cart.
2. Allow your site's address
In Settings → Embed protection, add your
site's domain. yoursite.com and
www.yoursite.com count as different domains, so
add the one visitors actually see (or both).
3. Paste your Player's code
Same as any WordPress site: a Custom HTML block where the Player should appear, or, for a Floating Player on every page, the footer box of a header-and-footer code plugin such as WPCode. See WordPress for the details, including clearing a caching plugin afterwards.
Sizes and colors: there's nothing extra to set up. For a product with sizes or colors, shoppers choose right in the video, the exact variation goes into their cart, and your theme's cart count updates.
On one page or post
- Open the page or post in the editor.
- Click the + button where you want the Player and add a Custom HTML block. (In Elementor, use the HTML widget.)
- Paste your embed code and click Update or Publish.
On every page (Floating Player)
Use a header-and-footer code plugin (WPCode is a popular free one) and paste your embed code into its footer box.
If you use a caching plugin, clear its cache after saving so visitors get the new version of the page. On WordPress.com, code blocks only run on plans that allow plugins.
On one page
- Open the page and click Edit.
- Click Add block (or the + where you want the Player) and choose Code.
- Paste your embed code, make sure the block is set to HTML, and save the page.
On every page (Floating Player)
Open your site's Code Injection settings and paste your embed code into the Footer box.
While you're editing, the Code block shows a "script disabled" placeholder. That's expected. Code blocks that run scripts, and Code Injection, aren't available on Squarespace's entry-level plan.
Floating Player
- In your site dashboard, go to Settings → Custom Code (under Advanced).
- Click + Add Custom Code and paste your embed code.
- Choose All pages (or the pages you want) and place the code in Body - end, then apply.
Wix only allows custom code on a Premium plan with a connected domain.
Other Player types: Wix's "Embed HTML" element runs code in a separate box on a Wix-owned address, so it doesn't reliably work with Embed protection yet. Email support@hoverreel.com and we'll help you set it up.
Look for a block or element called Custom HTML, Embed or Code, and paste your embed code into it where you want the Player. For the Floating Player on every page, look for a site-wide "custom code" or "footer code" setting (in Webflow, it's Site settings → Custom code → Footer code).
On a site you or a developer edit by hand, paste the
Floating Player's code just before </body>,
and any other Player's code where it should appear in the
page.
One Player, pasted once, can show every product page the videos tagged to that product. You don't need a Player, a playlist or a separate code for each product.
- Tag your videos to products. In the Library, open a video and tag the product it shows. Each product needs its Product page URL filled in (on the Products tab) — that's how the Player recognizes which product a page is for. Products imported from Shopify, BigCommerce or WooCommerce already have one.
- Set the Player to match the product page. Open the Player from the Players tab, and on its Content tab choose Match the product page. A checklist there shows what's done and what's left.
- Paste its code once, on your product page template. On Shopify: go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, choose Products → Default product in the page dropdown at the top, then Add section → Custom Liquid, and paste the code from the Player's Publish tab (on a Shopify store it's already the Shopify version, which names the product). If your products use more than one template, add it to each one. On other platforms, paste it in your single-product page template, or on every page.
A product with no tagged video shows nothing, and so does any page that isn't a product page — so pasting a Floating Player on every page is fine too. Each page shows up to 10 videos, starting with the ones where that product is the main product. New products and newly tagged videos show up on their own; you never touch the code again.
For a Floating Player, the product itself only shows once a shopper expands the video, since the page already shows it — you can change that under Player Settings → Product and button.
- Open your live page in a new tab, not your site editor's preview. A private window makes sure you're not seeing an old copy. Your Player should appear within a few seconds.
- Nothing there? Check the code made it onto the
page. Right-click the page, choose View
page source, and search for
hoverreel. If it isn't found, the code didn't save or was put in the wrong kind of block. Go back to the steps for your platform above. - Code is there but still nothing? Check
Settings → Embed protection. Your site's
exact domain has to be listed, and
yoursite.comandwww.yoursite.comcount as different domains. Insights → Data Quality lists any domains your Player was blocked on. - Make sure the Player has at least one video that has finished processing, and try with ad blockers turned off. For a Player set to Match the product page, the page's product needs a tagged video and its Product page URL filled in — otherwise it rightly shows nothing on that page.
Still stuck? Email support@hoverreel.com with your page address and we'll take a look.
Using HoverReel
No — this was a real, deliberate focus while building HoverReel. Videos load lazily (nothing streams until it's actually about to be seen), and playback quality is capped to match how large the player actually renders on the page, so a small embed never pulls full-size video data. Your page's own load time isn't affected.
Yes. Set a product's button to Add to cart, with its Shopify product page URL, and the video's button puts the real item straight into your store's cart — no app to install. Shoppers choose their size and color right in the video (see below), and on Shopify's own themes (Dawn, Horizon, Debut and their relatives) the cart icon in your header updates on its own.
To show each product page its own videos, see Show each product its own videos.
Yes, on Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce. When a shopper taps Add to Cart, HoverReel shows that product's real options from your store — sizes, colors and so on — with prices. Sold-out combinations are crossed out, and the chosen one goes into the cart.
Shopify: any product with its product page URL filled in and the Variant ID left blank. Only fill in a Variant ID if the button should always add one specific item (a one-size product, or a bundle). If you've set one on a product that has sizes or colors, HoverReel warns you and offers a one-click button to clear it.
WooCommerce: any product with its product page URL (or its WooCommerce ID). Nothing to set up on your store. See WooCommerce.
BigCommerce: any product with its product page URL (or its BigCommerce ID), once your Player's code is in BigCommerce's Script Manager. See BigCommerce.
Personalization — engraving, a monogram, a gift note, an uploaded photo — is a box on your product page, added by your theme, an app or a plugin. A video's Add to cart button can't see that box, so the product would go into the cart without it.
For those products, open the product in HoverReel and set Button action to Open product page (you can still change the button's text). The button then takes shoppers to your product page, where they fill in the details and add to cart as usual. Or remove the product from the video.
When HoverReel can tell a product needs extra details, the button takes shoppers to the product page automatically. To be sure, set those products to Open product page. HoverReel also checks your store for personalization and reminds you on the Dashboard and wherever you add products.
Yes. The easiest way is to choose your platform in Settings → Your website, then use Import from WooCommerce or Import from BigCommerce on the Products tab: imported products are already set to Add to Cart. Shoppers choose their size and color right in the video, and the item goes straight into your store's cart. Setup for each: WooCommerce, BigCommerce.
You can also set a product up by hand: set the button to Add to cart, choose the cart platform, and fill in its product page URL.
On any other platform, the button opens your product page, and HoverReel still counts the click in Insights.
Yes — the Insights tab covers views, watch time, completion rate, product clicks, add-to-carts, and where your traffic is coming from, broken down per video and per Player, with a real date-range picker.
The two most common causes are the code not making it
onto the page (usually because it went into a video or
image block instead of a code block) and your domain
missing from Settings → Embed protection, where
yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com
count as different domains. Also check your live page, not
your site editor's preview, which usually won't show it.
Check that it's working walks
through each step.
Account, billing & privacy
Nothing — the service is free during its current beta period. If we introduce paid plans later, existing accounts will get at least 60 days' notice before any fee applies.
HoverReel is invitation-based during beta — accounts are set up directly by us rather than through a public signup form. If you'd like access, email support@hoverreel.com and we'll get you set up.
Use the "Forgot your password?" link on the login page. You'll get a real reset link right away — no need to wait on us.
All traffic is encrypted (HTTPS), passwords are never stored in plain text, and visitor analytics are anonymous — we don't collect a visitor's name, email, or payment details through the widget. See our Privacy Policy for the full details on what's collected and why, or our Cookies Policy for exactly which cookies and browser storage we use.
Yes, a small amount — since the embed runs on your own
domain, it's stored under your site, not ours, so if your
site has its own cookie banner or privacy policy, you're the
one who discloses it (the same as any other first-party
script). It's a handful of anonymous localStorage/
sessionStorage values (never a cookie, and never
your visitors' names, emails, or payment details) used only to
avoid double-counting a repeat view or an already-clicked
"like." See the "What your visitors' browsers store" section
of the embed setup guide we send you for the exact list and a
copy-ready paragraph for your own policy — or email
support@hoverreel.com
and we'll send it over.
You can do both yourself: go to Settings → Data & account. Export your data downloads everything in your account, and Delete this account removes it permanently. If you'd rather we handle it, email support@hoverreel.com. See our Privacy Policy for the full details on your rights and choices.
Yes, and we recommend it. Go to Settings → Sign-in & security → Two-factor login. Once it's on, signing in on a new browser asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, 1Password, Authy and others), so a stolen password alone can't get in. Keep the recovery codes it gives you somewhere safe.
We also email you whenever your account is signed in from a new device, and Sign-in & security lists where you're signed in.
Every Monday at 9 AM your time, HoverReel emails a short summary of last week: views, cart adds, your best video, and one thing worth doing next. It's skipped when a week has no activity. Turn it off (or back on) under Settings → Email → Weekly summary email.
